Well, a hangover is miserable indeed, but sometimes it simply happens - to all of us…

“I will never drink again!“ Does this sentence sound familiar? If you feel like crap the day after drinking, check out these scientifically-proven cures. They will help alleviate the negative symptoms of a hangover, so you'll be on your way to feeling human again.

#1 Water

Hangovers are a sign that your body is extremely dehydrated. Rehydrating before you go to sleep definitely can help lessen the severity of headaches, fatigue, nausea, and confusion. It is especially important to load up on fluids if you should be vomiting.

#2 Bananas and Potatoes

Drinking alcohol not only dehydrates our body, but we also lose important electrolytes. Your body needs salt, potassium and magnesium. Eating bananas or potatoes in the morning can help, since both are a great source of potassium.

#3 Sprite

Strangely enough, sipping on sweet, caffeine-free soda may help to ease hangover symptoms. Chinese researchers found, that the drink helps the body to metabolize alcohol better.

#4 Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil has been used for centuries to treat headaches. Migraine pain occurs often due to poor blood flow, and peppermint oil helps to open and close the vessels that promote flow. Rub it on your temples and on the back of the neck to help soothe headaches and pressure.

#5 Pretzels, toast or crackers

You can’t keep your food down?  If you have a hangover, your liver is busy metabolizing the alcohol and can't handle the extra work, so your blood sugar levels stay down, and you can feel irritable and tired. Carbs can help bring your blood sugar levels back up the morning after. Choose lightly salted carbohydrates such as pretzels, toast or crackers, which give you energy without upsetting your fragile stomach.

#6 Asparagus

Could a breakfast of asparagus and eggs be all your body needs to recover from a hangover? Researchers have found that the spring vegetable’s combination of amino acids, minerals, vitamin C, potassium and folate, coupled with its natural anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties can reduce the symptoms of a hangover effectively.

#7 Honey

Because of its antioxidant properties, honey neutralizes the toxins created by consuming alcohol. The natural fructose in honey is an essential compound that helps the body break down alcohol into harmless by-products. Drink hot or cold water with honey and lemon (Lemons replenish the vitamin C you need).

#8 Ginger or Peppermint Tea

Sipping on (cold) ginger or peppermint tea is the perfect soothing brew for hangover-related nausea and stomachaches. Green tea is also known to be helpful to the liver.

#9 Avoid oily and spicy food

Avoid heavy or oily foods, since they increase the feeling of nausea. Acidic or spicy food is also difficult for your body to digest.

#10 Avoid coffee

Coffee may be the obvious port-of-call for most sufferers, but the caffeine actually makes your body dehydrate even more and causes your body to lose water quickly. Caffeine narrows your blood vessels and boosts blood pressure. Both of these may make the hangover worse. Better opt for water or fruit juice.

#11 Hair of the dog

Move over Bloody Mary´s! The alcohol may temporarily help your symptoms but could hurt in the long run. That morning drink could lead to an even worse hangover on the day after.

#12 Sleep it off

One of the other side effects of drinking is the disruption of your sleep cycle, which is one of the reasons you still feel a bit down even if you did get a decent amount of sleep. Fight this by simply sleeping some more. If you’re not going to be productive anyway, you might as well focus on getting well.

#13 Move or exercise

Go for a light walk, run, or swim. Exercise speeds up the process of metabolizing the alcohol, helping it leave your system faster. Plus, the endorphins released during exercise can help improve your mood.

#14 Don’t mix different types of alcohol.

If wine, beer, gin or vodka - always try to stick with one. Mixing different types is a foolproof way to end up with a hangover.

#15 Stay away from sugary drinks

Sugar makes the alcohol tastier and easier to consume. That way your taking in more than you realize.

By the way: Brandy gives you the most severe hangover as it has a great deal of poisonous by-products. It also has the highest number of congeners, which take the body a long time to break down in the liver. The liver is the main place of your body where poisons are being filtered. The older the brandy, the worse the damage.
