NOT ALL FAT IS THE SAME: WHAT IS OMEGA 3?

Fat generally has a bad reputation: it's supposedly unhealthy and makes you sick. That's the common belief. But this is only half the truth. True, some fats are bad for the body, but there are also healthy fats that you absolutely need.

Fats have different functions in the human body:

  • They stabilize the blood sugar level.
  • They control blood pressure.
  • They form the building material of cell membranes.
  • They affect the hormone balance.
  • They are important for bones, skin, and hair.

And because our bodies themselves can't produce the essential ones – so-called essential fats – we must supply them with fat through the diet or through the right supplements. At Women's Best, you'll find a selection of supplements that will provide you with these essential fats.

GOOD AND BAD FATS: OMEGA 3 AND OMEGA 6 FATTY ACIDS

There's a difference between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The former are mainly included in animal products and heavily processed foods. They are relatively unhealthy and have a negative effect on the cardiovascular system. Therefore, avoid these foods if possible!

In contrast, polyunsaturated fatty acids are among the essential fatty acids that the body can't produce on its own. This healthy group includes Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. A brief explanation of the chemical composition is useful for understanding the terms better: Basically, fatty acids are nothing more than carbons that are linked with single or double bonds in chains. Roughly speaking, the more double bonds, the healthier! With polyunsaturated fats, double bonds are found in several locations. Omega 3 or Omega 6 fats differ in the location of the carbon chain where the first double bond is.

WHAT IS OMEGA 3 AND OMEGA 6 – AND WHY ARE THEY SO IMPORTANT?

Omega 3 fats are considered to be especially healthy. They can reduce the risk of a heart attack and lower your cholesterol level. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are found in fish and vegetable oil, among other things. You increase the amount of Omega 3 in your diet, for example, by using linseed oil instead of olive oil or by eating fish regularly. Especially so-called alpha-linolenic acid – an Omega 3 fatty acid – is particularly healthy because it contributes to a functioning metabolism.

Dull, lustreless hair may be an indication of an Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency. In this case, you should watch for a balanced diet and compensate your balance of essential fatty acids.

If you don't like fish, are vegetarian or vegan, or just want to play it safe, you can also take these essential fatty acids as a supplement, for example, in the form of Omega 3 capsules and fish oil capsules.
